Project details

Ploi puternice in anii precedenti deja au afectat barjul, apa sa infiltrat in steril si pune presiune pe peretii barajului.

Imaginile au fost fotografiate in vara lui 2015.

Iron, copper, uranium and other metals were extracted in Tarnicioara.

Tarnicioara is in Suceava county the moust afourested in Romania, close to the historical sites of Bucovina.

From Frasin if you take the 177A road, after you pass Doroteia you start seeing the brown stream,  not a big stream but you start wandering why is like this,  you feel it can’t be good but you think that among this beauty it can’t be too bad so you go further, pass Ostra, and you see the ruins of the processing factory – the factory closes in 2007- and you may think you found the cause but, unknowingly, by this time you’ve already  pass the main polluter, the toxic sludge dam, tucked away in the forest- Few know of its existence, only the locals and all those people that worked in the mines- but if you want to find it hike through  the forest around 250m , opposite to the ruins  and at the end you will come face to face with a big mass of toxic waste, the remains of 57 years of mining.

Tarnicioara, Suceava is a big ecological problem but very few  know about it. The toxic waste spreads on more than 28 ha of land, with a hight of 80 m, in a place surrounded by old forests and its simple existence is hazardous to the environment. Residues of heavy metals polluted already the water – you started seeing it kilometers before – 15000 people are affected by it but few know or have time to worry about it . Heavy rain has already  affected the dam, the water infiltrated the toxic sludge putting pressure over the walls of the dam.

The images were captured 2015, summer.
